Is treadmill a good workout ? #health #fitness #workout
Two days ago, when I went to the mall in my hometown, I saw a driver searching for a parking lot as close as possible from the front door. Intrigued, I followed him. He took the escalator, and moments later, he crossed the door of a private gym ! I know it may sounds contradictory, but that’s really what he did. Subsequently, through the large window, I saw him jogging on a treadmill. 30 minutes later, my shopping completed, the man was still jogging on the treadmill !
(This translation of my original post is not the best one. So, be indulgent !)
By modern standards of training, walking or running on a treadmill for more than 30 minutes seems to be a good workout. Paradoxically, from a strictly evolutionary point of view, our body has developped strategies for storing, saving, and spending as little energy as possible ; it was a survival condition. When we look closely at our muscular and skeletal structure, we quickly realized that evolution has made us strong. We are able to perform intensive physical tasks in a short period of time, like hunting a prey. From that point, we will try, you and me, to answer the following question :
“If evolution has given us a body with strong muscles, and if evolution has led us to conserve our energy, why we suggest people to do exercises over a long period of time that deplete energy and that are not suitable for our muscular structure ?“
If evolution had wanted us to be able to perform aerobic exercices, our muscular structure would be similar as a horse. In fact, evolution gave us not only the amazing ability to adapt to a variety of physical activities, but also to engage our muscles in intense activity over a short period of time – it was a survival condition. So, why are you on a treadmill ? This exercice is in full contradiction with your physiology.
If your trainer requires you to be in gym three times a week doing three sets of the same exercises, find another trainer who can craft you a versatile program without aerobic exercises. I can tell you from my personal experience, that anaerobic exercises are more profitable, both to develop muscle mass than losing the excess fat that you have carefully nurtured and developed over the years!
